In 2003 the US EPA Great Lakes National Program Office selected FBNR to manage the implementation of the Buffalo River Remedial Action Plan (RAP). The contract marks the first time anywhere in the Great Lakes basin that a non-governmental organization has been given the mandate and authority to coordinate a RAP. EPA hopes this move will help make significant progress towards de-listing, including sediment remediation, non-point source pollution abatement, and habitat restoration.

In addition to the coordination of the Buffalo River RAP, FBNR is engaged in a variety of Buffalo River Watershed initiatives related to sediment remediation, public access, habitat restoration and open space protection, non-point source pollution and environmental education.

Buffalo River Sediment Remediation
Through the “Buffalo River Partnership” FBNR is working with numerous partners to develop
a scope of study and funding to develop a remediation strategy for contaminated sediments in the Buffalo River Area of Concern (AOC).  Negotiations are currently underway between FBNR and the US Army Corps of Engineers for a Feasibility Study of sediment remediation alternatives.  In addition FBNR is currently seeking funding through the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes National Program Office for the remediation of a section of the River known as the “Blue Tower Turning Basin”.
