NEWS & EVENTS TIRED OF TALKING ABOUT MAKING OUR WATERFRONT AND ENVIRONMENT BETTER? WANT TO SEE SOMETHING ACTUALLY *HAPPEN IN YOUR LIFETIME ?* There are two major issues coming to a head this month on the Great Lakes and we want to be sure the NIAGARA REGION has strong and commited input into both! Great Lakes Regional Collaboration a.. a draft strategy (AND FUNDING PROPOAL) for restoring and protecting the Great Lakes http://www.glrc.us/ b.. accepting public comments through September 9. c.. THERE WILL BE A PUBLIC MEETING ON AUGUST 30th at a location and time to be announced. d.. Why Get Involved? The Niagara Region is home to 3 of 43 of the Great Lake's most polluted areas. THIS NATIONAL EFFORT CAN HELP OUR REGION SECURE THE FUNDING TO ADDRESS A WIDE RANGE OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS - COMBINED SEWERS, BROWNFIELDS, HABITAT LOSS, WATER QUALITY PROBLEMS - BUT IT WILL NEED STRONG PUBLIC SUPPORT TO GET ADEQUATE FUNDING!! Great Lakes Basin Water Resources Compact a.. This Great Lakes States binding "responsibility pact" sets rules for the withdrawal of Great Lakes waters b.. Public comment ending on August 29, 2005. c.. THERE WILL BE A PUBLIC MEETING ON August 2 at UB in Amherst at the Center for Tomorrow from 6:30-9 PM . d.. Why Get Involved? Because if you think WNY's economy has challenges now - can you imagine how bad things will get when NY City, Chicago or our water hungry friends in the Western US try (and try hard) to take away the water in our lakes/river? WE URGE EVERYONE WHO CARES ABOUT WNY's WATER AND OUR FUTURE TO GET INVOLVED IN BOTH OF THESE EFFORTS - The Friends are taking a strong role in developing positions on both initiatives on behalf of WNY.
